In Argungu, fishing is taken very seriously. Competitors are only allowed to use traditional fishing tools and many prefer to catch fish entirely by hand, to demonstrate their prowess.

The traditional fishing tools are hand nets and calabash. Calabash enables them to float on water and it is also used for storage of fish.

On the day of the festival canoeist go to the deepest part of the river and drive the fish towards the shallow parts where the fisherman are

After the gunshot thousands of competitors jump into the river .

They have an hour to catch the largest fish.

The  river is small, but it is well stocked. It is prohibited for anyone to fish after the festival till the next year.

The drummers who move through the water on their canoes; beating drums adds special atmosphere to the festival

As the hunt for the big catch goes on, fishermen are also harvesting smaller fish, to be sold or consumed later

At the end of the hour, the fish are piled up at the foot of the scale.

Abubakar Dabo emerges as the winner of 59th Argungu fishing festival with a catch of 65kg fish and he was awarded with N300,000.00 (1700 euros), honda city car, hajj trip (traveling to Mecca) and medical insurance for one year.
